His Play and Us | Guru Angad Dev Ji’s Teaching on Life & Karma

The following slok of Guru Angad Dev on SGGS 146, is often quoted in a Sikh gathering, which summarize the basic point of the Sikhi. This very slok is also given at the end of the bani ‘Jap’. Let us ponder over it:

ਮ: 2 ॥

Mėhlā 2.

Pa-uṇ gurū pāṇī piṯā māṯā ḏẖaraṯ mahaṯ.

Ḏinas rāṯ ḏu-e ḏā-ī ḏā-i-ā kẖelai sagal jagaṯ.

Cẖang-ā-ī-ā buri-ā-ī-ā vācẖe ḏẖaram haḏūr.

Karmī āpo āpṇī ke neṛai ke ḏūr.

Jinī nām ḏẖi-ā-i-ā ga-e maskaṯ gẖāl.

Nānak ṯe mukẖ ujle hor keṯī cẖẖutī nāl. ||2||

The bani of Second Nanak.

In essence: Breathing is necessary for the body, so is the Guru for the mortal. Water is the father of all, so is the great mother, earth, of all. Day and night work as nurses while the entire world plays. In Akalpurakh’s righteous Court, deeds of merit and demerits are judged. As per the done deeds, some are drawn close to Him and some are gone far away from Him. The hard work of those ones who have contemplated His name is turned to be successful. Oh Nanak! Such persons become distinguished with His grace and many others get emancipated with their help.

The Guru has pointed out that our life is gloried through water and earth; however, the Guru is as important to us as air to breathe. It is the Guru who leads us to a state in which we become good. It is like a play of life being played on this planet day and night. Our deeds become a measure to go close to our Creator or to get drawn away from Him. Contemplating on Him frees us.

Wishes.
